Dutch-Bangla Pack: A Dutch–Bangladesh Collaboration Built on Trust & Partnership
When Royal LC Packaging’s fourth-generation leader, Lucas Lammers, first visited Bangladesh in the 1990s, the goal was simple: explore sourcing opportunities for jute and industrial sacks. What he found instead was a promising business environment and an entrepreneurial partner, Abdul Ahad, whose experience in Bangladesh’s growing packaging industry aligned perfectly with Royal LC Packaging’s global ambitions and its values: committed, reliable and loyal.
A Partnership that Became a Business
By 2007, this partnership led to the creation of Dutch-Bangla Pack Ltd. (DBPL), a 50:50 joint venture. Starting from a modest facility in Munshiganj, DBPL began producing large industrial bags used for transporting food, chemicals and construction materials. These “big bags”, commonly known as Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), quickly became one of Bangladesh’s most competitive export products in the sector.
“Our confidence grew because the partnership was built on mutual respect, trust and shared values,” Lucas reflects.
Scaling Production and Market Reach
Today, the company employs 1,500 people and produces over 3.2 million big bags annually for more than 260 international clients, primarily in Europe. Its annual turnover has surpassed USD 13 million, and further investments are underway to enhance vertical integration and export readiness. DBPL has also taken significant steps toward sustainability by, among others, recycling more than 85% of its production waste through its Green Bangla facility.
Turning Challenges into Strengths
Growth never comes without challenges. Building a skilled workforce, ensuring reliable utilities and meeting global quality benchmarks require time, commitment and long-term investment. DBPL turned these hurdles into advantages by adopting internationally recognised standards, including SA8000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and FSSC 22000. As part of Royal LC Packaging, DBPL has held an EcoVadis platinum rating for the past 5 years.
“We invested in people, processes and compliance—because that is what global clients expect,” says Abdul Mumit, now Managing Director of DBPL.
A Lesson for New Investors
Royal LC Packaging and DBPL show how Bangladesh offers a compelling business case: a large, dedicated workforce, improving infrastructure and strong export potential. For new Dutch entrepreneurs, the message is clear—with the right partnerships and commitment to quality and sustainability, Bangladesh delivers long-term growth and global market access.
